Opening Night Jitters Minor for Drivers & Track

The true sign of spring is when the thunder fills the air. The thunder of stock car engines filling the air on opening night that is. Friday night marked the beginning when every car in the pits was tied for the points lead entering the night but only a few would remain there at night’s end. The new paint and vinyl letters were shining throughout as the Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway put the green flag to the 2009 season.

TOTAL POWER SALES STREET STOCKS
The Season started off with a bang in the Total Power Sales Street Stock division as a five car brought out the caution on lap one. Shawn Haydon started on the pole after a strong heat race victory earlier in the night. Caution would fly again on lap three as the motor of Vernon Long expired. Haydon would lead Andy Gross and Jerry Winkler to the green flag on the restart. Gross would spin on lap number 6 taking out the 19x of Kevin Hebbie in the process. The caution would give Tim Reichenberger the second spot behind Haydon.

Haydon would have pressure from Reichenberger the rest of the race but it would be Jerry Winkler putting the show on further back as he sliced and diced to third challenging for the lead until eventually falling back and finishing third. Haydon pick up the checkered flag with Reichenberger second, Winkler third, Dan Dehn fourth and Frank Groeschl fifth.

MILLER LITE GRAND NATIONALS
Caution came out on lap two the Miller Lite Grand National feature race as Larry and Kenny Richards led the field. Kenny Richards would take the point as Terry Van Roy moved into second. Caution would come when the Larry Richards machine spun in corner four. On the restart K. Richards and Van Roy would lead Brian Monday and Adam Pugh to the restart. At the half way point it would continue to be K Richards out front with Van Roy and Monday in solid second and third positions. Jason Fish would battle Brian Henry fo fourth as the laps would wind down. A lap fifteen caution would bunch the field for a five lap shoot out with Richards bring them to the green. It would be no problem for Richards though as he was just to strong. Kenny Richards would win with Van Roy, Monday, and Will Schumacher would grab fourth at the line with Jason Fish fifth.

MODIFIEDS
Scott Mullen led the field to the line for the Modified feature with Chris Engels starting to his outside. Mullen would grab the lead on lap one with Julie Wedelstadt moving into second. The two cars would hold those positions in a green to checker feature event with Mullen picking up the win Wedelstadt would finish second. Tavis Spaulding and Eric Scribner would battle it out for third with Spaulding grabbing that spot. Scribner would finish fourth and Ryan Besaw fifth.

LYNN’S SERVICE CENTER DIRT DEVILS
It would Kevin Bir grabbing the lead on lap two of the Lynn’s Service Center feature event with Tony Everhard close behind in second. Caution would fly on lap 4 with the 222 of Dave Wilkens losing a tire and bringing things to a slow down. Birr and T Everhard would go door to door for three laps before caution would again slow the field. Birr would have mechanical issues under yellow and head to the pits handing the lead to T Everhard with Nick Everhard in second. Tony Everhard would distance himself from the field but behind him Birr would make a charge from the back of the pack forward. Birr would eventually catch Everhard and make a daring pass at the line to pick up the win by .028 seconds. Birr, Everhard, Sheppard and Cory Wagner rounded out the top five.
