MILLER LITE GRAND NATIONALS

The true sign of spring is when the thunder fills the air. The thunder of stock car engines filling the air on opening night that is. Friday night marked the beginning when every car in the pits was tied for the points lead entering the night but only a few would remain there at night’s end. The new paint and vinyl letters were shining throughout as the Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway put the green flag to the 2009 season.

TOTAL POWER SALES STREET STOCKS
The Season started off with a bang in the Total Power Sales Street Stock division as a five car brought out the caution on lap one. Shawn Haydon started on the pole after a strong heat race victory earlier in the night. Caution would fly again on lap three as the motor of Vernon Long expired. Haydon would lead Andy Gross and Jerry Winkler to the green flag on the restart. Gross would spin on lap number 6 taking out the 19x of Kevin Hebbie in the process. The caution would give Tim Reichenberger the second spot behind Haydon.

After months of anticipation the season is under way at the Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway. This will mark the Speedzone’s 10th anniversary.

There were many of the veterans there at the practice and a lot of new faces that took some practice laps.

If the car count for the practice is any indication of what the season holds we should have an excellent car count for opening night and throughout the year. There were more than 60 cars that went through inspection and did some testing.

From where the track started out on Monday to today, Mike Rabe did an outstanding prep job on the track. The drivers saw a dry slick track in the beginning and then they were able to come out and run on a tacky track. The drivers had opportunities to try different set ups for both track conditions.
Veteran driver Ben Brinkman said that this practice was probably one of the best practices that he has seen at the Speedzone.

The 2009 season gets underway marking the 10th anniversary next Friday May 8th. Pit gates will open at 4:00pm with admission of $22.00 and transponder rental fee of $5.00.

The weather finely gave us a great day for the car show. The 70 degree temp. brought out 17 cars and hundreds of fans to see the new cars. There were cars from each division on hand to compete for best of show.

Trophies were awarded to 4 teams for their efforts in putting together some real eye catching cars this year. When fans were done voting, the return of the #7 modified of Charlie "the Tuna" Ewald won the modified division by a landslide. "It's a great way to come out of retirement" said Charlie the 64 year old modified driver who retired in 2007 after winning his first feature at the Speedzone.

Brian Vinney took the Dirt Devil division, with his 09. The Grand Nationals had a close vote with the 49 of Troy Weich edging out the win by two vote over the 24 car of Keisner racing. The 22 car won the street stock division with a pair of beautiful cars.

All the kids on hand had a great time getting hotshots and sitting in cars.

With record car count and near perfect day with temperatures in the low 60ʼs, the second annual Grim Reaper Enduro went off with out a hitch, fans saw some awesome racing.

What started out as your typical 4 Cylinder Enduro, cars were bunched up 4, 5 and 6 wide going through the day. Jared Seifert soon showed everyone that we was going to be the man to beat.

On lap three our first casualty went into the books when Dan Sanchez, a local demo driver favorite, decided to take a ride on his roof. Dan came into turn three and went low to be surprised by a tire on the track and went for a roll. Dan landed on his tires and when the track was stopped he said he was ok and wanted to continue. Dan lasted only one more lap when his car decided that it had a mind of its own and died and needed to be pushed off the track by the Grim Reaper.
